Five minutes with Billy Twomey - Leading Showjumper at HOYS

Connolly's RED MILLS on 16 November 2015

The life of an International showjumper is an extremely busy one. So we were delighted to visit RED MILLS Ambassador Billy Twomey after an outstanding Horse of the Year Show 2015 (HOYS), along with our nutritionist Laura Hoey.

Laura works closely with head girl Kerry Finch to evaluate all of Billy’s horses on a regular basis, this ensures that their diets meet all their requirements so they can perform at their very best. While Laura discussed diet plans with Kerry, we caught up with Billy.

You’ve had a busy showjumping season so far with a number of high profile wins. Your team is an integral part of this, can you tell us a bit about them?

We have a great team here. My wife Joanne and Sarah, my secretary, run the office and Alan manages my public relations.

In the stables and at International shows, Kerry, is our head girl, alongside her are the grooms Gorgia Elwood and Kirsty Clark. Beth Veron is with us also and is our stable jockey.

There’s a full team of horses based with you in Nottinghamshire. How many are in your current string?

We currently have 15 horses of all ages which are competing throughout the year (Billy goes on to discuss Billy Twomey riding Tinka's Sernadethree of the stable stars).

Tinka’s Sernade is now 18 and I’ve had her for nine years. She has jumped at all the major equestrianchampionships around the world, including the Olympics. When she is being turned out into the field it has to be with a pony Charlie B, otherwise she will jump out! She has a two year old by embryo transfer by my great stallion Luidam.

12 year old Diaghilev is a character. He likes to buck when he is fresh so you have to sit tight!

He was second in the Hickstead Derby this year and together we won the Leading Showjumper of the Year at HOYS.

Lizziemary is a nine year old chestnut mare. She has been produced by the same team who produced Tinka, Kim Barzilay and Emma-Joe Slater. She’s showing great promise in her first year at 5* level, already having a few wins.

In more recent months you have had wins at the World Cup Qualifier in Oslo and being crowned Leading Showjumper of the Year at HOYS. Has there been one result or show that stands out for you?

Winning Leading Showjumper of the Year has to be the stand out moment, it’s the one everybody wants to win!

What are you plans for the upcoming months?

My next big show is the Paris Masters at the beginning of December and then hopefully the Olympia London Horse Show, if I manage to get invited!

As 2015 will be coming to an end soon. Is there a particular show that you look forward to each year?

The Dublin Horse Show has to be the best show in the world and it always feels great to go home!

If you are looking for an award winning showjumping diet, similar to our Ambassador Billy Twomey; why not get in-touch with one of our equine nutrition experts.
