Congratulations! Your bitch has been mated, and now it’s up to you (and us) to provide her with the best care throughout her pregnancy and beyond.

Diet

A well balanced diet is essential for the brood bitch as it provides the bitch and growing puppies with the vital nutrients, minerals, and vitamins they need.

In these early stages of pregnancy, the bitch should continue to eat a well-balanced diet in a similar manner to  before she was pregnant. Ensure that body condition is closely monitored and that she does not put on excessive weight, as this could increase the risk of problems when giving birth.

As she moves into the last trimester of pregnancy, the bitch will require a high protein and high oil diet. Depending on personal preferences, brood bitches can be fed once or twice a day. However the frequency of feeding may need to be increased in the last trimester of pregnancy as her puppies are taking up a lot of space in her abdomen, which leaves little room for the stomach to expand.

RED MILLS Xcel has been specially formulated to meet the needs of breeding and bitches, especially in the last trimester of pregnancy and while lactating. At 32% protein and 20% oil, it is the ideal choice as higher protein levels are required in preparation for milk production and the energy required to raise a litter.

Exercise and General Health

Ensure that you monitor the health and wellbeing of your bitch on a regular basis and seek veterinary advice if necessary.

You should also make sure the bitch is wormed regularly, while reading the label carefully to ensure it is safe to give to a pregnant bitch.
